I have been back in the states for almost two months now and am obsessed with reality TV. In Tokyo, I only watched a couple of shows when I went over to 優子's house after work. Mostly food-obsessed and really strange programs. But now I rush home to watch Project Runway and America's Next Top Model. I think these two shows have a really great setup of living with strangers that you are also competing with.

What will I do when summer comes and I have to go back to staring at Gunung Salak in the evenings?!? No, I'm sure the countryside will be beautiful...

I sold some small works as part of slowpink at the Tokyo Wonder Site in Shibuya in the spring, and now one of the buyers is asking for some small illustrations to publish in a local magazine. I still have some trouble reading the stories in Japanese, but will get help at language exchange.

I will be going to Indonesia in a couple of weeks to help build houses, etc. Hopefully, there will be internet access now and then? I don't really know what the situation will be like... Maybe I can skip over to Singapore to see some old friends this summer.

Growing up as a mixed-race kid in the San Francisco Bay Area, I heard countless people repeat the assertion that mixed race children are always the most beautiful. I could never accept this platitude as true. I couldn't even begin to consider it. There was too much evidence in my environment that seemed to point to white people as the only people worth looking at. The gradual 'discovery' of multiracial people by the culture at large has led me to wonder what nugget of truth might be behind such a statement. ...

"In October, we launched a competition to illustrate a new edition of Yann Martel's Man Booker prizewinning Life of Pi.
The competition is expanding: The Times and Canongate Books have been joined by further partnerships of newspapers and publishers: The Age and Text Publishing from Australia and The Globe and Mail and Knopf from Canada. More importantly: the deadline has been extended to midnight on January 31, 2006."
